[This posting contains spoilers for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season Seven, Episode One. You have been warned.]
We decided to postpone "A Hard Day's Night" viewing until tomorrow, which gives a moment to comment about tonight's Buffy season premiere. I'd say we're off to a rousing and intriquing start. A lot of potentially interesting storylines.
For example, while I realized that Spike (William) would be tormented by his past thanks to his recently restored soul, I had no idea just how Joss would do it to make it new and unique. He couldn't react in the exact same way as Angel and Darla. So, first, I was surprised to find him at Sunnydale High School in such a state. ("I tried to cut it out.") Then, you could've knocked me over with a feather when the former baddies begin to batter him (loved seeing the mayor again!). Of course, kudos to those actors of the camero parade--especially Adam and The Master--who probably spent 6 to 8 hours in make-up for that snippet of screen time.
Now, taking Buffy to the next level. We don't have to, of course, but the show will go (be) there anyway since part of the brilliance of the writing is that monsters are metaphors for life's anxieties (explained and expounded upon so well by Dave here) usually tied together with an underlying themes or challenges we all face. Since last season seemed to be about losing control, making bad choices and generally behaving badly (the monster within), I hope to see a new season not only about atonement but about redemption and restoration--a more hopeful season after a long dark year in the lives of our heros and her entourage. Perhaps even glimpsed already by the fact that Willow is being rehabilitated by the wicca coven not merely punished (we'll have to wait and see what transpires there as well). Don't get me wrong, I'm still looking forward to seeing some major monster butt-kickings, inner turmoils and things getting wrinkly for the Scoobies, but I'd also like to see a little happiness touch their lives.
If my hubby can say the nearly 18-year old Michelle Trachtenberg is fast approaching new hotness, I guess there's no harm (no foul) if I pause to [gasp!] appreciate (what Will Smith might refer to...incorrectly...as "old and busted") Anthony Head/Rupert Giles. (For more, check out the image galleries at "And you thought you were obsessed!") Tony Head, a ruggedly handsome chap and fine actor, who brings a smart, tender demeanor to the persona of Giles...
Parting shot: If Buffy, Xander, Willow, and Cordelia were the Scooby Gang aka Scoobies, does that make Dawn and her new crowd (Goth Girl and Smoker Boy) the Scrappy Gang/Scrappies? "Oh, I hope not," says husband. We'll see...
