I've never done a Friday Five before, but the blog's been on the heavy side this week, and I (for one) could use a pick-me-up, so why not this to start with...
1. What is your favorite type of literature to read (magazine, newspaper, novels, nonfiction, poetry, etc.)? I'm pretty balanced in preferences between non-fiction, fiction and poetry, but favorite does not always mean most frequent. I read a lot of non-fiction most often especially books about decorating, cooking, how movies are made, zen philosophy, and writing. 2. What is your favorite novel? What day is it? I'd be hard pressed to think of a favorite novel. Perhaps Stephen King's Eyes of the Dragon; its a fabulous read. When I'm looking for something light, I enjoy the Cat who books by Lillian Jackson. Favorite book is easier for me because I read and re-read a non-fiction work by Natalie Goldberg entitled Wild Mind--it has to be my favorite book. 3. Do you have a favorite poem? (Share it!) Unquestionably Daffodils by William Wordsworth. As a matter of fact, I follow the poem's advice. I have it memorized (mostly--though sometimes lines slip my memory). When I'm really battling with insomnia at 3:00 in the morning, and my mind keeps racing from one thing to another, I'll start reciting the poem in my head and visualizing fields of daffodils. If I'm concentrating on the poem, I stop thinking about all the anxieties that are keeping me awake...and often it works and I drift off to sleep! Personal Bonus Poetry Sharing: I recently came across Sean Astin's Official Website and read his poems shared there and quite liked them. You can read other poems I like (and if you're interested you can read some of my poetry) by clicking on the menu button for my scrapbook. 4. What is one thing you've always wanted to read, or wish you had more time to read? Too many to count. I've always felt badly that I have read or completely read more classic literature. In school I was a slow but dilligent reader--high retention for what I could finish reading. Fortunately for my academic standing, I was also quick on the uptake though so when I couldn't finish a book, I could usually garner enough information from class discussions to take exams. I've nearly completed Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings and am quite pleased with myself. Like so many of the books my husband reads, I've always felt I should read them (Tolkien, I mean...seems like growing up EVERYONE read either the trilogy or The Hobbit), and after falling in LOVE with the movie(s), it has given me greater incentive. Of course, when I was really little, I was scared by the cartoon version of either LOTR or The Hobbit, and that put me off them as well... 5. What are you currently reading? Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings, as I mentioned. And I just tonight picked up a new book, Christohper Lowell's: If you can dream it, you can do it!, which is as much about looking as it is reading, as well as the new Buffy magazine. Also, I have a book about journalistic ethics in the U.S. today that I took out of the library...I'll see if I get to this before I run out of renewals. [ ] |
