Ever the Question... What is wrong with people?! You would've thought I'd have given up trying to figure it out by now, but I still wonder. A recent cruelty case brought to my attention--just one of many similar this summer--begs the question and prompts House Rabbit Society and the Humane Society of the United States to ask another: "Who is this person (or persons)?"
RICHMOND, Calif. (July 24, 2003) - House Rabbit Society (HRS), a national nonprofit organization headquartered in Richmond, is seeking information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for a terrible act of animal cruelty that occurred this past week. While driving on Highway One south of San Francisco, two anonymous witnesses saw what appeared to be an animal thrown out of the window of the car ahead of them. After stopping to investigate, the people discovered that a very small, badly hurt and terrified black rabbit had in fact been thrown into traffic.
The witnesses picked the rabbit up and took her to a local shelter, where she was given morphine for her pain. Fully expecting the rabbit to perish, the shelter staff was shocked to see the tiny creature fighting for her life...
...If you have information that could assist the investigation, or would like to help offset medical costs for this rabbit and others like her, please contact HRS or make a donation online. In addition, the shelter is also seeking homes for Samosa and other rabbits in your area - interested people may contact HRS at (510) 970-7575. Donations may be sent to HRS Headquarters, 148 Broadway, Richmond, CA 94804, attn: Samosa Fund.
While HRS is in need of funds for medical expenses, the HSUS is offering funds of another sort. HSUS is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whomever perpetrated this act.
Sadly, there have been other such cases recently (links may expire soon*):

UPDATE!Kitten thrown from car dies (Aug 19, 2003)
"Surprisingly, the cute little long-haired brown tabby wasn’t injured after it was thrown from a vehicle...But five days later, the kitten died of kidney failure related to dehydration and lack of food, a Kingston Humane Society spokeswoman said yesterday."
Driver Throws Pet Kitten Out Window -- Detroit/Livonia, MI (July 17, 2003)
The father apparently told police he had to dispose of the kitten
because the apartment complex where they live does not allow pets.
NOTE: I have included one of the least graphic of the HRS photos of Samosa here. If you need to witness the cruelty for yourself, more photos are available on the HRS page linked to above. *I have saved copies; if the links have expired and you'd like a copy, e-mail me.
