Have you purchased your tickets?
On Tuesday, December 16th, Phil and I will be spending ALL DAY at the movies. Not only that, but we're making an adventure out of it by staying at an area hotel the night before. Let me explain... We learned that on December 16th a hundred theaters across the country got special permission from Newline Cinema to not only show the final installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Return of the King, before midnight (since it officially releases in theaters on Wednesday, December 17th), but they are actually showing the extended versions of the first two films as a lead in to the final installment--the full Lord of the Rings Trilogy. The first two parts of the story are over 3 hours each, but since we've only had an opportunity to see the original (shorter) editions on the big screen it will be a treat just getting to see the special editions that way. Add to that the fun of watching the three films back-to-back-to-back so we can see the story as a complete production, and you've got a fun day. The challenge was to find one of those 100 theaters close enough to us--we decided that within a few hours was an acceptable drive. While the trilogy is listed on the website as showing in Washington D.C. (close) and Richmond, VA (further but not too far away), they were already sold out by the time we checked them. The location that wasn't sold out was the AMC Hampton Town Center 24 in Hampton, VA. A quick check of Mapquest revealed it to be just under three hours southeast of us, which was acceptable by our criteria. We went ahead and purchased them, and really they weren't too expensive -- just $25 for all 3 movies (that's just $8.33 per movie -- less than the non-matinee ticket prices in our area). Knowing how sci-fan and fantasy fans can be about planning ahead...as fans ourselves...and knowing how area traffic can get in this area along the east coast, we decided to make a mini-vacation out of the event. We will drive down the night before and stay in Hampton overnight. Since purchasing tickets online guarantees ticket but not what seats you'll get, we figured it was better to get to the theater earlier rather than later. After all, you especially don't want bad seats when you'll be sitting in them (save intermissions) for more than 9 hours. [ ] |
