The attack took place mid-day in full view of a witness. As they protected their nest, the swans were grabbed by a young man who jumped on and stabbed the birds, said the witness. The witness also said the attacker repeatedly looked to a group of male friends for encouragement. The men left the scene in several cars. Local Animal Care and Control officers called to the scene contacted ASPCA cruelty investigators, and ASPCA Special Agent Joseph Pentangelo responded. The swans bodies were taken to the ASPCA hospital for examination.
"He [the male swan] sustained one wound to his chest that was a substantial wound – there was a lot of bleeding," said Pentangelo to NY1 News. "The female, her wounds were much more clear. She was stabbed on the right side. She had multiple stab wounds, her ribs had been broken. This was not a quick death, by any means."
Local residents regularly water and generally look after the swans that gather in the park each spring. The ASPCA recovered six eggs from the swans' nest and hope to save the resulting hatchlings. Members of the community are dismayed by the violent attack, and have begun leaving notes and pictures at the birds' now empty nest to remember their "community pets."
Anyone with information about the attacks is encouraged to call 877-THE-ASPCA.
